Mantel and bookcases

This was a great project that involved remodeling a large basement. One room was to serve as a seating and TV watching area, with room for billiards and ping pong. An adjacent room has a full sized bar and gaming table. There is also a nook for exercise equipment, a full bath, and an area we will call “the hockey wall” (still in progress) for the kids to take slap shots at, as hard as they want. We also designed a full sized laundry room, and cleaned up utility and electrical closets.

In the main seating are, we wanted to keep the look warm, so walls were clad with stained, glazed, and antiqued cherry wood, and we added the fantastic field stone fireplace with antiqued wood mantel and remote control gas logs as the main focal point. Stereo components are integrated into the flanking cabinetry.

The bar area has a copper countertop with an integral copper sink and Sub Zero 700 series refrigerator and freezer with ice maker. The backsplash tiles are iridescent glass.  We tiled both large rooms with a wood grained plank tile but did a running bond pattern in the first, and a herringbone in the second.  They are easy to maintain and conduct the radiant heat in the floors very well.

In the laundry room, we tiled the space from floor to ceiling with white subway tile, adding green glass accents to pick up the color of the washers and dryers. The finishes are simple: corian counters, large undermount stainless slop sink, polished stainless hanging bar, and lots of cabinets for storage and cubbies for laundry baskets.

It’s a great space. We’re still tweaking it, wrapping up the hockey wall, which I will post once complete.
